Hi 4C Families!

Some important reminders below:

  • Make sure you are working on your division facts!
  • Families should continue to check the blog every week as we highlight the important learning we are doing in the classroom.
  • We are pleased to welcome Knowledge Keeper, Chantal Chagnon, to Northern Lights School for a school-wide residency with all students on March 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12. This opportunity has been funded by the NLS Parent Fundraising Society, so we pass on a huge thank you for their generosity!

  • Chantal Chagnon is a Cree/Métis Multidisciplinary Artist, Educator, Knowledge Keeper and Activist with roots in Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Saskatchewan. Cultural Wisdom and Traditional Ceremony are always present in her Teaching Artistry, as she carries her Ancestral Knowledge forward in a good way. Offering Storytelling, Songs, Drumming, Cultural Teachings, Traditional Indigenous Craftsmanship, Art Creation and collaboration has allowed Chantal to share throughout Canada and the World.

Each class will get a chance to meet with and learn from Chantal individually. Chantal will focus on Storytelling and Medicine Wheel teachings based on her lived experiences and wisdom that she will share with us. Working alongside our teachers, Chantal will also provide insight and guidance on continuing to encourage Land-Based Learning in our building.

To honour our school’s TRC commitment this year, Northern Lights School has made the following commitment to action for the 2025-2026 school year: 62.3: Utilize Indigenous knowledges, languages, and teaching methods in classrooms (focus on applying learning that includes inviting Indigenous community members to share knowledge with students).
Here is what we have been up to this week:

Story Vines - Students put their crafting skills on display as they worked very hard to finish up their story vines. They are going to get one more block on Monday to finish up. We can't wait to show you these when you come for March conferences!

Whole Body Listening - We had a big discussion on Monday about Whole Body Listening. I have noticed that students are not listening when I am giving out instructions - students are talking to each other, playing with their shoelaces/arms/fingers and moving around. This shows that students are not listening and almost all the time, students do not know the next steps for the task they are about to do. We are going to change this behaviour by showing whole body listening. Ask your child about this - and have an open conversation about it.

Math - This week, we learned the second method of solving long division questions - using the box method/area model. We also learned how to solve word problems. Our Show What You Know for division will be on Monday.

Visiting the Science Fair - We visited the Gr. 5 science fair. This was a cool opportunity and we also discussed as a class that this may be something that the current Gr. 4 students choose to do next year!

Pink Shirt Day Assembly - We had a school-wide assembly for Pink Shirt Day - which is a day that we promote kindness, respect and inclusion and bring people together to stand up against bullying.

Science/Art - This week, we learned about constellations. We did an artwork related to constellations!
